Whether you enjoy riding, hiking, climbing, or just sight-seeing, Craig has something for you. With several parks, reservoirs, and surrounding mountains, Craig is an undiscovered and uncrowded area to explore.
Visit Cedar Mountain just outside of town for a full day of fun. This mountain offers great rock climbing and beautiful views. Hiking and biking are also some enjoyable activities suggested in the area. At an elevation of 6,500 feet, you will be able to see all of the town of Craig and a bird’s eye view of the Yampa River. Definitely a landmark in the area you don’t want to miss.
Elkhead Reservoir is freshly expanded and close to town. Fishing, boating, and water toys are all allowed, so bring the whole family for a fun day at the lake. If you like to drop a line, you’ll be pleased with the abundance of Bass and Northern Pike in this lake. Included in the reservoir’s upgrades is a campground named Bear’s Ears that includes 16 camping spots. So bring your tent, sit by the fire, and enjoy all that this striking reservation has to offer.
About 50 miles northwest of town, you will reach the Sandwash Basin. This basin is popular among people who relish in ATV/OHV riding, camping, and viewing petroglyphs. If you are lucky, you will get to see one of the many wild horse herds that roam this area. Some describe the Sandwash Basin as “a well-kept secret,” so prepare to truly feel away from town.
